Regulating Your Steinway Piano

The modern piano has more than 9,000 moving parts that need to be adjusted regularly and replaced occasionally. A piano will play noticeably better with regulation every 7–10 years with typical home use.

Signs that your piano may need regulation or rebuilding include:

  • The action feels heavy

  • Playing softly has become difficult

  • The touch and/or tone seems inconsistent

  • The sound is muffled or harsh

Regulation consists of adjusting each note at over three dozen separate points. This includes shaping hammers for optimal voicing, carefully positioning hammers to strings, adjusting key weight, and cleaning, lubricating and repairing many different parts of the instrument.
